What is Google’s role, exactly? |
Is Google a neutral entity, a structural beam of the online world or just another organization free to pursue its own ends?
From a Washington Post article: Engineers from Twitter, Facebook and MySpace have created an open-source plug-in that they hope proves their worst fears about Google’s decision to fold its social results into search — that Google is moving away from its mission to be a neutral directory of the Internet.
Should Google be free to do as it pleases, or has it become too big, too important to play by the old rules? Is it on its way to becoming something that deserves stricter regulation - or is the power it wields really just a symptom of how good a job they do and how much people choose to use their services?
Addrenaline's view:
We’ll have to see where this battle goes - but deciding what rules the web must play by is still in a state of flux. One thing that cannot be denied or understated is the immense power Google wields, and the fear of that power may lead to a different search structure or set of values… for good or ill.
